João Ernani Vaz Elias 16 de April de 2019 - 18h
I think the article " A word on artistic political correctness " apresented a good summarized idea about the conflict between art and the public's acusation of cultural appropriation. As the author says " Every film, song or book that hits the limelight is scrutinized through a new lens : the cultural apprpriation perspective. ". I am writing because I think that it is importat to me, as a reader, express my opinion, I want to give my point of view of the topic of the article.
On a hand, some artists abuse of the culture of other people with offensive productions. On the other hand, the critic is increasingly placing the artists under the suspicion of cultural appropriation. Analyzing this fact, I concluded that, to solve this problem, both might join to fight against the disrespect for culture and, while doing that, preserve the freedom of art.
Artists could be more responsible and study more when they deal with culture. They should try to see if what they are doing will not represent incorrectly a people. For example, speaking with a person that is from the culture you intend to show, or inclusive visiting the country are things that problably will help.
The critic must criticize cases of real cultural appopriation, but they could try to understand the true intention of the artist too. Maybe something that appears be cultural appropriation was just a bad representation of an uninformed professional.
If everyone work together, we will have a lot of art productions that use correctly other people culture. They are important because the public opinion have already been opened to the importance of preserve and appreciate some culture by similar ones.
