The independence of Brazil took place in 1822, having as its major landmark the cry of independence that was made by Pedro de Alcântara (D. Pedro I during the First Reign), on the banks of the Ipiranga River, on September 7, 1822. With the independence of Brazil declared, the country became a monarchy with the coronation of D. Pedro I.
